What is Cat's Claw?
Cat's claw (Uncaria tomentosa) is a woody vine from the Amazon, named for its claw-shaped thorns, whose bark has been used traditionally for immune support and joint comfort. Its oxindole alkaloids and other compounds show anti-inflammatory and immune-modulating activity in laboratory studies, and small human trials report improvements in joint tenderness in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid conditions. Because it modulates the immune system, people with autoimmune conditions or on immunosuppressants should be cautious and check with a clinician, and it has mild blood-thinning activity. Look for an extract standardized to oxindole alkaloids and low in tannins, typically 350 to 500 mg daily.
