What is Serrapeptase?
Serrapeptase is a protein-digesting enzyme first identified in silkworm-associated bacteria and now produced by fermentation. Taken on an empty stomach so it reaches the bloodstream intact, it is used to help thin mucus and ease sinus and respiratory congestion, and traditionally for swelling and post-injury comfort. Clinical evidence is mixed and mostly from small studies, so it is fair to call it promising rather than proven, and quality varies widely, with potency measured in SPU or activity units. It has mild blood-thinning potential, so it should be paused before surgery and used cautiously with anticoagulants. Typical servings provide 40,000 to 120,000 units away from food.
