Bacopa monnieri is a wetland herb central to Ayurvedic medicine, where it has been used for centuries as a brain tonic and longevity herb. Its active compounds, bacosides A and B, appear to enhance synaptic communication, support dendrite growth, and protect neurons from oxidative stress. Multiple randomized controlled trials have demonstrated improvements in memory consolidation, learning speed, and information retention, particularly with consistent use over 8-12 weeks. Unlike fast-acting nootropics, bacopa works gradually. Standard doses are 300 mg of extract (standardized to 45-50% bacosides) one to two times daily, ideally with a fat-containing meal.
