What is St. John's Wort?
St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is one of the most-studied botanical antidepressants. Reviews of dozens of trials find standardized extracts work as well as standard medication for mild-to-moderate low mood, with fewer side effects. The major caveat is interactions: St. John's wort strongly induces liver enzymes and can weaken many drugs, including birth control, blood thinners, antidepressants, immunosuppressants, and HIV medication, and combining it with serotonergic drugs risks serotonin excess. Standardize to 0.3 percent hypericin, typically 300 mg three times daily. Because of the interaction profile, clear it with a clinician or pharmacist first, especially if you take any prescription medication.
