What is White Willow Bark?
White willow (Salix alba) bark has been used as a pain reliever for over 2,400 years. Hippocrates recommended it; later, chemists isolated its active glycoside salicin, which led to the synthesis of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) in 1899. Standardized white willow extracts (containing 15-25% salicin) have moderate evidence for chronic low back pain, osteoarthritis, and tension headache, with fewer GI side effects than aspirin. Effects are slower in onset but longer-lasting. Standard dose is 240 mg of salicin (typically 1000-1500 mg of extract) per day. Avoid with blood thinners, NSAIDs, or aspirin allergy.
