Spermidine is a naturally occurring polyamine first discovered in semen (hence the name) but present in every living cell. It is a potent inducer of autophagy, the cellular process of breaking down and recycling damaged components. Large observational studies link higher dietary spermidine intake (from foods like aged cheese, wheat germ, mushrooms, and natto) to lower all-cause mortality and reduced cardiovascular risk. Preclinical research shows lifespan extension across yeast, flies, worms, and mice. Supplemental doses of 1-10 mg per day match the upper range of dietary intake in long-lived populations.
