Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid produced when gut bacteria ferment dietary fiber, and it is the preferred energy source for colon cells (colonocytes). Adequate butyrate supports the gut barrier, reduces low-grade inflammation, and is increasingly linked to immune and even cognitive function via the gut-brain axis. Many modern diets are too low in fermentable fiber to produce sufficient butyrate. Tributyrin is a triglyceride form of butyrate that survives stomach acid and releases butyrate directly in the colon, far more effective than sodium butyrate. Standard dose is 500-2000 mg per day with food.
