What is Beta-Sitosterol?
Beta-sitosterol is the most abundant of the plant sterols, cholesterol-shaped molecules found in nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils. In the gut it competes with dietary cholesterol for absorption, and regular intake of plant sterols is one of the better-evidenced natural ways to modestly lower LDL cholesterol, backed by approved health claims. At higher concentrated doses, beta-sitosterol is also studied for easing the urinary symptoms that come with an enlarged prostate, with several positive trials. It is well tolerated. To meaningfully affect cholesterol you generally need around 2 g of total plant sterols daily, often from fortified foods, while prostate formulas use smaller standardized amounts.
