What is L-Carnosine?
Carnosine is a dipeptide of beta-alanine and histidine concentrated in muscle and brain tissue. Its standout property is anti-glycation: it shields proteins from the sugar-driven cross-linking (advanced glycation end-products) that stiffens tissues and accelerates aging. It also buffers acid during intense exercise and acts as an antioxidant in nerve tissue. Levels fall with age and are lower in vegetarians, since the precursors come from meat. Supplemental doses of 500 to 1000 mg daily are studied for healthy aging, skin, and cognition. It is well tolerated, though much is broken down by the enzyme carnosinase, so consistent daily dosing matters.
