What is CoQ10?
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance found in every cell of the body, where it powers the production of ATP, the molecular currency of cellular energy, and protects mitochondria from oxidative damage. The heart, kidneys, and liver contain the highest concentrations because of their continuous energy demands. CoQ10 production declines with age (starting in the late 30s) and is significantly depleted by statin medications, which inhibit the same enzyme responsible for both cholesterol and CoQ10 synthesis. Standard ubiquinone CoQ10 is suitable for adults under 40; ubiquinol (the reduced form) is preferred after age 40 or alongside statins. Standard dose is 100-200 mg with a fat-containing meal.
