What is Lemon Balm?
Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a citrus-scented herb in the mint family used since antiquity for stress, mild digestive complaints, and cognitive support. Its rosmarinic acid content inhibits GABA transaminase, raising GABA levels. Single-dose trials show measurable improvements in calmness, alertness, and accuracy on cognitive tasks within 60 minutes, without sedation. Lemon balm is also studied for menopausal symptoms, cold sore frequency (when applied topically), and mild dyspepsia. Standard dose is 300-600 mg of extract or 1-3 g of dried leaf, twice daily.
