What is Passionflower Extract?

Passionflower (Passiflora incarnata) is a climbing vine native to the Americas, used traditionally for anxiety and insomnia. Its mechanism involves modulating GABA activity in the brain. Several randomized trials, including pre-operative anxiety trials in which passionflower performed comparably to low-dose benzodiazepines, support its use for acute and generalized anxiety. It does not impair next-day function, unlike many sleep aids. Standard dose is 400-800 mg of extract, or 0.5-2 ml of liquid extract, taken in the evening.
