What is Dong Quai?
Dong quai (Angelica sinensis) is one of the most important herbs in traditional Chinese medicine for women, often called female ginseng and used for menstrual comfort, irregular cycles, and the transition through menopause. It is rich in coumarin compounds and ferulic acid with mild circulatory and anti-inflammatory activity. Modern clinical evidence is limited and mixed, and it is traditionally used within a formula rather than alone, so it is best framed as a traditional women's tonic rather than a proven treatment for hot flashes. It has blood-thinning activity and must be avoided in pregnancy and alongside anticoagulants. Standardized root extracts around 500 mg daily are typical. Discuss with a clinician if you have a hormone-sensitive condition.
