What is Slippery Elm?
Slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) comes from the inner bark of the North American elm tree and is rich in mucilage, a gel-forming fiber that swells with water into a soothing, protective coating. Herbalists have long used it for sore throats, occasional heartburn, and an irritated digestive tract, and it is a common ingredient in throat lozenges and gut-soothing blends. Direct clinical trials are limited, so its use rests largely on this physical coating action and long traditional use. It is gentle and well tolerated, though because the mucilage can slow absorption, it is best taken apart from medications. Around 400 to 500 mg, or a lozenge, with plenty of water is typical.
