What is Methyl-B12?
Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin) is essential for red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis, and the protective myelin sheath around nerves. Unlike most vitamins, B12 is produced exclusively by microorganisms and accumulates in animal foods, making vegans and vegetarians universally at risk of deficiency. Older adults are also at risk because stomach acid declines with age, impairing B12 absorption from food. Symptoms of deficiency include fatigue, brain fog, tingling in the hands and feet, and mood changes. Methylcobalamin is the active form the body uses directly, bypassing the conversion step required of cheaper cyanocobalamin. Standard daily doses are 500-1,000 mcg sublingually or oral.
