What is Chasteberry?
Chasteberry (Vitex agnus-castus), also called monk's pepper, is the most-studied herb for PMS and luteal phase symptoms. It works by binding dopamine D2 receptors in the pituitary, gently lowering prolactin and supporting progesterone in the second half of the menstrual cycle. Multiple randomized trials demonstrate significant reductions in breast tenderness, mood swings, irritability, and bloating across 3+ cycles of use. Effects build slowly, at least 8-12 weeks for full benefit. Standard dose is 20-40 mg of dried fruit equivalent or 200-500 mg of extract, taken in the morning. Avoid during pregnancy or while using hormonal contraceptives.
