What is DGL Licorice?
Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) has the glycyrrhizin removed, the compound responsible for licorice's potential to raise blood pressure, while retaining the flavonoids that soothe and protect the gastric mucosa. DGL stimulates mucus secretion, supports the production of new stomach lining cells, and has been used clinically for heartburn, gastritis, and mild peptic ulcer for decades. It's commonly chewed before meals to coat the esophagus and stomach. Standard dose is 400-800 mg, 20 minutes before meals. Safer than regular licorice for long-term use, but pregnant women should still consult a clinician.
